Bride's Breakfast

Originally called 'Christmas Morning Wife Saver Breakfast'. My mom makes this recipe every Christmas. We only have it twice a year, but it's well worth the wait. This dish needs to set over night, so all the egg mixture is absorbed by the bread. The best cheese to use is MacLaren's Imperial Sharp Cheddar Cheese - it's a must! (see image below).

Ingredients:

16 slices of white bread, crusts off

1 package of back-bacon, or ham-style bacon

1 package of sharp Imperial cheese (red container)

6 large eggs

Salt & pepper

1 1/2 tsp of dry mustard

2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce

1/4 cup of minced white onion

3/4 cup of green pepper, chopped

3 cups of milk

1/4 cup of melted butter

Few dashes of Tabasco sauce

Special K or Cornflakes

Directions:

Step 1: Butter a 9 X 13 glass dish. Arrange 8 slices of bread on the bottom, then add back-bacon or ham. Add tub of cheese on top. Add the other 8 slices of bread.

Step 2: In a bowl, mix together eggs, milk, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, pinch of salt and lots of fresh black pepper. Mix together well.

Step 3: Pour egg mixture over bread mixture. Cover with tin foil or plastic wrap, and let sit overnight.

Step 4: The next morning, preheat the oven to 350 F. Sprinkle bread mixture with minced onion and green pepper. Add enough Special K or Cornflakes to cover the top of the dish. Drizzle melted butter over top.

Step 5: Cook for 1 hour, uncovered until nicely golden brown and let stand for 10 minutes before serving.
